How to Share a Smartphone Connection With a Laptop

Your smartphone enables you to do many of the things you do with your laptop, such as send email or surf the Internet. However, there are some Internet tasks that are just more convenient and enjoyable when performed on your laptop, such as watching movies or viewing sites that may not render properly on a phone screen. If you’re on the road with both devices, you can share the data or Wi-Fi connection on your smartphone to provide Internet access for your laptop.

Apple iPhones
Step 1
Press “Home” and tap the “Settings” icon.
Step 2
Tap the “General” icon and then choose “Network.”
Step 3
Tap “Set Up Personal Hotspot” in the Network menu.
Step 4
Slide the “Personal Hotspot” switch to the “ON” position and then select the “Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth” option in the pop-up window.
Step 5
Tap “Wi-Fi Password” and enter a passcode for accessing your iPhone from the laptop.
Step 6
Press “Home” to return to the iPhone main screen.

Android Smartphones
Step 1
Press “Home” and then select “Settings.” Tap the “More…” link in the Wireless & Networks section.
Step 2
Tap the “Wireless & Networks” button and then tap “Tethering & Portable Hotspot.”
Step 3
Tap the check box next to “Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot” to enable the option.
Step 4
Tap “Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot Settings” and type in a descriptive name for the Wi-Fi network in the “SSID” field. Enter a username and password for accessing the Wi-Fi connection on the Android phone in the corresponding fields and then tap “Save.” Press “Home” to return to the main screen.
BlackBerry Smartphones
Step 1
Tap the top of the screen to display the drop-down bar and then select “Settings.”
Step 2
Tap “Network Connections” in the Settings menu and then select “Wi-Fi.” Select the “On” option and then tap “Mobile Hotspot.”
Step 3
Enter a personal passcode for accessing the BlackBerry hotspot and then tap “OK.” The phone creates the incoming connection and listens for computers or devices connecting to it.

Windows Smartphones
Step 1
Press “Home” button to display the main screen and then swipe to the left until you see a list of all applications installed on the phone in alphabetical order.
Step 2
Tap the “Settings” app and then select the “System” tab. Tap “Internet Sharing” and then slide the “Sharing” switch to the “On” position.
Step 3
Tap the “Setup” on Internet Sharing screen. Tap the “Broadcast Name” field and then type in a descriptive name for the shared connection. Enter a password for the connection and then tap the “Check Mark” icon to save the settings. Press “Home” to return to the main screen.
